Yorktown Golf Course to Become Family Rec. Center

YORKTOWN, N.Y.-- The vacated Shallow Creek Golf Course will become a family recreation center, after the Yorktown town board discussed options for developing the property last Tuesday.

The board chose between Kevin Chin’s plan, a family recreation center, and Yorktown resident Rocco Cambareri’s plan to rehabilitate the course back to much of what it was before.

Chin, who owns a golf instruction business at the Lake Isle Country Club in Eastchester, proposed creating a golf learning program, driving range and practice hole, a high-end miniature golf course, laser tag, a Frisbee golf course, and a fitness studio offering yoga and other fitness activities in the existing building that would also offer snacks. The facility would operate year-round.

Rocco Cambareri of the Metropolitan Athletic Corporation proposed re-establishing a restaurant in the existing building and rehabilitating the golf course so it could become the nine hole, par 3 golf course it once was.

Siegel said the flexibility and diversity of the recreation center was the “ideal” decision for the location. While members of the board, including Jim Martorano and Terrence Murphy, preferred allowing Cambareri to go ahead with his proposal, the board feared he would slip into the same business pitfalls as the previous owner because it was so similar to the original use of the plan.

Bianco agreed that it would be nice to give the project to a Yorktown resident, however he was concerned with what would happen should the course be reverted back to its original course and then face the same financial problems. He asked the attending members of the Parks and Recreation department to perhaps work with Cambareri to find him another property he could develop in the town.

The board, in conjunction with the Parks and Recreation Department, discussed that Chin’s proposal had the biggest range of activities, had a draw for teens and would hit a larger target market.

“When you have a local, Yorktown born and raised person here and he wants to bring back an original par 3 golf course, who is being backed by the PGA and has gotten the mobility to rehabilitate a facility that I grew up playing golf at, that I’d like to see come back,” Murphy said.

The board approved to move forward and figure out the terms with Chin in a three to two vote, with Murphy and Martorano in opposition.
