Michael Fiore, 85, Former Harrison Carpenter

HARRISON, N.Y. – Former Harrison resident Michael Robert Fiore died Sunday, Sept. 2, while working in the garden at his cabin, Wildflower, in Maplecrest, N.Y. He was 85.

He was born June 7, 1927, in Harrison to Antonio and Angelina Morano Fiore. One in a family of 13 children, he attended Harrison High School before joining the Navy. Fiore served aboard the USS Hector as a machinist's mate during World War II.

After the war, he was a self-employed carpenter and custom kitchen cabinet maker until his retirement. He also served as a gun safety instructor for the Harrison Police Department, attaining the rank of sergeant in the auxiliary.

His greatest love was spending time in the Catskills, hunting with fellow members of the Mamaroneck Rod and Gun Club and enjoying the wilderness in the company of his dogs. Fiore enjoyed following the New York Yankees, gardening, wood-carving and, most recently, working with ceramics.

He also loved to travel, visiting relatives in Australia, hunting bears in Canada, taking a trip to Alaska and driving his RV cross-country and back several times. He always made time to visit with family and friends along the way, his family said.

Fiore is survived by two brothers, Ernest Fiore, of North Fort Myers, Fla., and Victor Fiore, of Port Chester; two sisters, Mary Fiore Santoro, of Mamaroneck, and Angela Fiore Williams, of Rye Brook; two sons, Kenneth Fiore, of Sheffield Lake, Ohio, and Stephen Fiore, of Danbury, Conn.; two daughters, Michele Fiore Wimmers, of Havre de Grace, Md., and Patricia Fiore Brickmeier, of Massapequa, N.Y.; 11 grandchildren and more than 100 nieces and nephews and grand-nieces and grand-nephews, as well as numerous friends.

His wishes were to be cremated and have the ashes placed on the grounds of his cabin, where a memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27. Decker Funeral Home in Windham, N.Y., is handling arrangements.

Memorial donations may be made to Defenders of Wildlife, P.O. Box 1553, Merrifield, VA 22116, or Albany Stratton VA Medical Center, 113 Holland Ave., Albany, NY 12208.
