$5,000 Reward Offered For Info In Fatal Westchester Teen Shooting

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. -The New York Crime Stoppers have doubled their reward to for information that leads to the conviction of a shooter that took the life of Mount Vernon teenager Shamoya McKenzie on New Year’s Eve.

On Friday, the Crime Stoppers announced that they are offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information on the fatal shooting that took the life of the promising 13-year-old basketball star.

Funeral services for McKenzie will be held today from 1 to 4 p.m. with a service held at 4 p.m. at the Macedonia Baptist Church on Ninth Avenue. She is scheduled to be buried at Mount Hope Cemetery in Greenburgh the next day, following at 8:30 a.m. procession at Macedonia Baptist Church.

At approximately 2:30 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, McKenzie was a passenger in a car when she was struck in the head by a stray bullet near the intersection of Chestnut Place and 3rd Street.

According to police, McKenzie was transported to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead. A second victim was also struck in the shooting, suffering non-life threatening injuries.

A star for both the Mount Vernon Junior Knights, Lady Elites and the High School JV Lady Knights, McKenzie had dreams of attending the University of Connecticut to play under coach Geno Auriemma before making her way to the WNBA.

Earlier this week, the Huskies made McKenzie an honorable member of their squad, complete with a letter from the school for her family and jersey bearing her number 30.

The response to the shooting has been wide sweeping, with family and friends setting up a GoFundMe fundraising page that saw more than $20,000 in donations in less than three days . Several local basketball programs have also pledged to raise money to help the family.
