Armed Suspects In Stolen Lexus, Infiniti Ram Two Police Cruisers In Rye

A call from a concerned resident about a suspicious car led to a large manhunt in Westchester that included helicopters with infra-red cameras and K-9 dogs, and a crash into two Rye Police cars by the suspects, prompting a school district lockout, according to Rye Police Commissioner Michael Corcoran.

One suspect was apprehended by police during the manhunt in Westchester overnight Wednesday while others remain at large.

The incident began around 2:45 a.m., Wednesday on Johnson Place near the Greenhaven area of Rye,, when the resident called the police to report the suspicious car with at least one of the occupants walking into their neighbor's driveway, Cocoran said.

When responding officers turned onto the street, a black Lexus SUV rammed into one of the police cars and overturned. A loaded handgun was found outside of the vehicle, he added.

The driver of the car was apprehended immediately. At the same time, a second car, a black Infinity, believed to be driven by the other suspects, rammed into a second police car before fleeing the area and the suspects jumping out of the vehicle on Barlow Lane where it turns into Trails End, Cocoran said.

The suspects fled into the area, with one taken into custody, and at least one of two more getting away, he added.

A large search, including officers from Port Chester, the Westchester County police, Harrison and Mamorneck helped search the area using dogs and infra-red cameras without success, he said.

The search included the areas around Rye Neck Schools, causing a lockout for the day, district officials said.

Corcoran said officers will be on hand when school is released for the day to make sure that all children reach home safely.

"This is an ongoing very fluid situation, but we believe the other suspects are out of the area by now," Cocoran said. "I have to commend our officers for a great job that was carried out with professionalism and skill. I'm very proud of their work."

The driver of the black SUV was slightly injured and taken to an area hospital where he was treated and released into the custody of Rye Police.

The hunt for the remaining suspects continues, as does the investigation, Cocoran said.

Officials with the Westchester District Attorney's Office are working with the department on charges for the two arrested.
