HARRISON, N.Y. -- A Bridgeport, Conn., man was arrested Monday on the Hutchinson River Parkway after Westchester County Police found two pounds of marijuana in the car after a traffic stop.

Gamel Grant, 32, of Bridgeport was charged with second-degree criminal possession of marijuana, a felony, and second-degree criminal use of drug paraphernalia.

The incident began at 12:51 p.m. when County Police Officer Steven Stromberg stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation, while it was traveling north on the Hutch in Harrison near the Interstate 287 interchange.

According to reports, as Stromberg was speaking to the driver, he detected a strong odor of marijuana coming from inside the car.

After removing the driver and Grant, who was a passenger in the vehicle, Stromberg observed several small clear plastic bags containing marijuana among some clothing items on the rear seat, police said.

A subsequent search of the vehicle turned up a knapsack containing more bags of marijuana and a scale, according to police

In total, 24 small bags with a combined weight of two pounds of marijuana were seized, county police said.

Grant told Stromberg that the marijuana in the knapsack was his, according to police.

Grant was taken into custody at the scene and transported for booking to County Police headquarters in Hawthorne. He was arraigned in North Castle Town Court and was being held in lieu of $5,000 bail at the County Jail in Valhalla pending an appearance in Harrison Town Court.

The driver, Adrian Surgeon, 28, of the Bronx, was issued summonses for unlawful possession of marijuana and having illegally tinted windows on his vehicle, both violations, so he was permitted to drive away, according to county police spokesman Kieran O'Leary.
