Westchester County District Attorney Janet DiFiore announced that Manuela Morgado, 48, of 1035 East Boston Post Road, was sentenced to state prison on her guilty plea in September on one court of second-degree murder.

“This defendant methodically planned and carried out the murder of her four year old child, a child whose life was taken well before his time by the very person whose job it was to protect him,'' DiFiore said.  "She will now spend the next 20 years in prison, and will have to live with her conscience for the rest of her life.”

On Oct. 1, 2012, at 10:43 am, Mamaroneck Village police responded to 1035 East Boston Post Road where they found the defendant in her bedroom in a semi-conscious state with an unresponsive child in her arms.

Morgado had left a suicide note and taken an overdose of Xanax in an attempt to kill herself. The defendant was taken to Sound Shore Medical Center for treatment.

The child was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police secured the scene before initiating an extensive and through investigation and search warrants were executed for various items in the apartment and at the hospital.

The defendant was subsequently arrested at the hospital. She confessed to using helium, drugs and finally a pillow to kill Jason "Jake" Reish. She was involved in a bitter custody battle at the time with her former fiance, Dr. Timothy Reish, a Manhattan surgeon and Briarcliff Manor resident.

Assistant District Attorney Christine Hatfield and Assistant District Barbara Egenhauser of the Special Prosecutions Division prosecuted the case.
