Mount Vernon Fire Department To Begin Annual Inspections

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – Mount Vernon homeowners will soon be getting a familiar knock on the door, as city officials with the fire department get prepared to begin the annual fire safety inspections of all multi-family residential apartment buildings and three-family plus homes.

According to Mount Vernon’s acting Fire Commissioner Noah Lighty, beginning in the end of January, officials from the Bureau of Fire Prevention will begin making their home calls as mandatory fire safety inspections are conducted.

The inspection program was adopted and authorized by the Mount Vernon City Council in May of last year. This year, “due to increased cost of operations and personnel,” inspection fees will be collected to conduct the mandatory inspections that are required under state fire and life codes.

Homeowners of a three-family plus residence will be charged $100, while multi-family residential apartment buildings will be charged $300.

“This is a mandatory program. The New York State Buildings and Fire codes require annual inspections,” Lighty noted. “The Mount Vernon Fire Department is revamping this program to be proactive in fire prevention and to enhance and enforce safety procedures to assist in structure fire reductions and loss of life and property.”
