“We are moving the State Police into the 21st century,” said Superintendent Joseph D’Amico, in a news release. “Facebook and Twitter give us a chance to directly communicate and interact with the people we serve across New York State. Not only will we be able to get important public safety information out quickly, but New Yorkers will also get to know more about the work our troopers do in their communities.”
The official Facebook page is here, and the Twitter feed can be found here, or @nyspolice. As of Monday afternoon, the police had already attracted more than 700 Facebook "likes," and more than 120 Twitter followers.
Troopers said they intend to post information on how the public can assist in investigations, public safety information, arrests, road closures and traffic safety tips.
State Police caution would-be followers to look for "the official page of the New York State Police." More information about New York State Police can be found on the agency's official website, which is separate from Facebook and Twitter.
