A Carleton Court resident reported the burglary in October 2010, after finding signs that her apartment had been entered while she was out, including an empty beer can, according to the police report. The resident reported that a small amount of cash and change was missing from the apartment, police said.

Investigators took saliva samples from the beer can on the day of the burglary and sent the samples to the Connecticut State Forensics Lab for testing, according to the police report. The results returned in late 2013 showed a match to Melvin Marriner, 50, of Huckleberry Drive South, police said.

Marriner had been convicted of larceny and burglary charges from four other cases in 2010, according to state judicial system records.

He was arrested on a warrant Wednesday afternoon on the new charges, police said. Marriner told officers he had been in a relationship with the apartment’s resident at the time of the burglary and denied breaking in, according to police reports.

Marriner was charged with third-degree burglary and sixth-degree larceny. He was held on $50,000 bond and is due in court on March 6.
