Police: 14-Year-Old Charged In Rye Invasion Hoax

RYE, N.Y. – A 14-year-old boy was arrested and charged with falsely reporting a home invasion last week by Rye police.

A text message sent June 27 to the Rye Brook Police Department said someone had been shot in the home at 105 North St. and three people were barricaded in the home by a man with a shotgun, police said.

Police officers broke into the house and removed a woman and three teenagers before searching neighbors’ homes for a suspect, Rye Police Commissioner William Connors said.

After the area was secured, police said the incident may have been a hoax. About 30 police officers from Rye, Harrison, Port Chester, Westchester County and the MTA responded.

"The hazard to the police departments is huge," Connors said. "We had people coming from various different neighborhoods, and officers had to go into a house, which is a dangerous situation. It's a terrible waste of resources, but under circumstances like this we have no choice."

The charge filed against the boy, whose name was withheld due to his age, is a class A misdemeanor. His case was referred to the family court.

A similar case was reported two months ago in western New York State, but it allegedly involved an adult.
