Kenneth Spalter, 72, was shot once in the throat around 10 p.m., as he and his 71-year-old wife got out of their vehicle and two men approached and demanded their keys and the car on the 3800 block of Juniata Street, reported the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Spalter struggled with the two men and one of the robbers pulled out a gun and shot him once, the paper added.

Following the shooting, neighbors and his wife worked to perform CPR until first responders could arrive. Spalter was pronounced dead at a local hospital, added the St.Louis Post-Dispatch.

More than 100 residents of the tight-knit neighborhood held a candlelight vigil on Sunday to honor Spalter and his family and to show support for the neighborhood.

The newspaper reported that others are providing meals.

The two men got away in a nearby car. Police are investigating the crime, but no suspects have been identified.
