Multiple patrol officers and members of the Westchester County Police Hazardous Devices Units were dispatched to the eastbound Cross County Parkway on Tuesday night when a motorist called 911 to report that he was “having difficulty breathing, feeling woozy and experiencing numbness in his hands from the effects of chemical vapors.”

Upon arrival members of the Hazardous Devices Unit recovered three bottles of acetone and one bottle of ethanol alcohol from the trunk of the car, police said. Some of the contents of the bottles had spilled from their containers while being transported.

The driver was treated at the scene by members of the Eastchester EMS and transported to Sound Shore Medical Center for evaluation. He was also cited by police for improperly transporting hazardous chemicals in his vehicle.

“Our Hazardous Devices Unit is known more informally as the Bomb Squad, but this incident illustrates that HDU’s highly trained personnel can handle more than explosives,” Westchester County Police posted on Facebook. “HDU members are trained to deal with chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear materials as well. All HDU members are trained Haz-Mat technicians.”
