Jared Brewton pleaded guilty in July to a six-count indictment that included charges of identity theft, subscribing to false and fraudulent tax returns as well as impersonating an IRS employee and New York State Department of Labor officials.

Prosecutors said that for four years, beginning in 2006, Brewton concocted a scheme to obtain fraudulent tax returns from the IRS, sending various income tax returns that inflated income and withholding figures. In one instance, officials said, Brewton falsely reported his wages in 2006 were $783,981 and nearly $360,000 had been withheld by his employers.

Brewton also obtained tax refunds in other people’s names, prosecutors said, by stealing the names or defrauding people into giving him their personal information. He would then file the returns in their names, directing the refunds to be sent to his address, prosecutors said.

In addition, prosecutors said in at least one instance Brewton posed as someone affiliated with the state’s Department of Labor to persuade a taxpayer to provide him with their Social Security number and other personal information. On another occasion, he claimed to be an IRS employee named Susan Waters.

“His substantial sentence should deter others who contemplate doing the same thing,” U.S. Attorney Phreet Bharara said in a statement.
