Buchwald, a Democrat, was sworn into office at White Plains City Hall on Tuesday after defeating incumbent Republican Robert Castelli for the 93rd Assembly District seat in November. Buchwald, who previously served on the White Plains Common Council, said that he is pleased that the federal government came to an agreement on the fiscal cliff, which he hopes will prevent a further recession.

“We have work to do in Westchester County to promote the best strengths of our communities,” Buchwald said. “We need more job growth and have to attract new businesses and let them know that this district is open for business.”

As far as gun control, Buchwald said that the problem isn’t necessarily guns, saying that mental health as the main issue. Still, Buchwald said there are certain type of weapons that should not be made available to the public.

“I am a firm believer that certain weapons by their nature enable rage, which is all the more deadly,” Buchwald said. “I will work to make sure there is not as much gun violence in our communities. We can and must do more.”

State Sen. Andrea Stewart-Cousins (D-Yonkers) said that Buchwald is the right person at the right time to do the right thing for all of the constituents of the 93rd Assembly District. Steward-Cousins said the state government needs partners, not ideology now.

“The fate of the United States is at stake,” Stewart-Cousins said. “We don’t need to work against each other but with each other for White Plains, the county and the state.”

White Plains Mayor Tom Roach expressed his pleasure with Buchwald, both as a council member in White Plains for the past year and as the new member of the Assembly. Roach credited Buchwald’s knowledge of local government, which he said will be beneficial to the district.

The 93rd Assembly District covers Bedford, Harrison, Lewisboro, Mt. Kisco, New Castle, North Castle, North Salem, Pound Ridge and half of White Plains.
