Harrison Asks Public for Input on Master Plan

HARRISON, N.Y. — Harrison residents are urged to come out to a Town Board public work session next week to say what they would like to see in an update of the town's master plan. The update is expected to be completed in November.

The board and members of BFJ Planning will be at the West Harrison Annex, 251 Underhill Ave., on Tuesday, June 12, at 7 p.m. to discuss where the project stands. A similar meeting was held three months ago to announce that the master plan, last updated as a draft in 1998, would get a full update.

BFJ Planning reps told the Town Board last month the revisions will focus on the downtown and the area of Westchester Avenue by I-287 known as the "Platinum Mile." BFJ Planning senior associate Jonathan Martin said 19 percent of businesses on the "Platinum Mile" are currently vacant, as is a key downtown location at the intersection of Halstead and Harrison avenues that most recently was home to a Quizno's restaurant.

"The zoning districts in the central business district can be strenthened, but areas zoned for residential use are right on the fringe of the downtown," Martin said at a Town Board meeting a month ago. "We are hoping that a proposed project to revamp the downtown, which would potentially create a residential component, would be a catalyst to revitalize the downtown."

Frank Fish, a principal of BFJ Planning, said the group will take the ideas they're hearing and continue to work over the summer. Fish said an official public hearing before the Town Board should take place in October.

The board voted in March to pay BFJ Planning $48,000 for the update to the master plan.
