This project has been in development for quite some time and, through careful negotiations, the current town board has secured a plan that will enhance our downtown business district. The new transit oriented development includes the construction of 143 apartments, 27,000 square feet of retail space and two pedestrian plazas at the Metro-North Railroad station while increasing parking availability for commuters.
In speaking with residents, I understand the frustration many feel with the onslaught of inclement weather our region has experienced this year. The repeated precipitation required that our Highway Department continue to plow and salt our roadways. January and February presented freeze and thaw cycles that created the ideal condition for pothole formation. As water builds up and freezes on the road’s surface and in the cracks, the top layer of pavement loosens and at times breaks free, thereby creating potholes. Our DPW highway crews have been working diligently to address potholes and are currently employing a more permanent patching application.
Through the use of our asphalt hot box, current patch applications will improve and prolong our road repair system. In the past, our Department of Public Works used only cold asphalt patch to temporarily fill pot holes and repair our municipal roadways. The asphalt hot box is designed to maintain the asphalt temperature, for a prolonged period of time, thereby making any repairs permanent. I am pleased Harrison is ahead of many other municipalities in pothole response and I appreciate everyone’s continued patience as we keep up with this season’s maintenance issues. This year’s Harrison Spring Spruce Up Weekend will take place Saturday, April 18. I am happy to report that recently FiOS 1 News covered a story on a current report released by online real estate agency, Movoto.com. The feature, “Westchester's Best Places to Live,” ranked Harrison as number 6. The national publication analyzed the 2010 U.S. Census data of towns with populations exceeding 10,000 and ranked each on the basis of amenities, quality of life, crime, taxes, unemployment, commute time and weather.
