WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. - Democrat George Latimer was leading Republican Challenger Bob Cohen with 80 percent of the vote tallied Tuesday night.

Latimer had 47,862 votes, or 55 percent, according to unofficial election results. Cohen had 39,771 votes, 45 percent,

The winner will serve New York’s 37th District in the state Senate.

If the lead holds, Latimer will take the seat of retiring state Sen. Suzi Oppenheimer after the hotly contested race, speculated as pivotal in deciding which party controls the state Senate in the next legislative session.

Latimer, who is ending his term as District 91 Assembly member, formerly served as chairman of the Westchester County Board of Legislators.

Cohen is a real estate businessman and former member of Scarsdale’s volunteer fire department. Cohen made his second bid for the seat this season, after losing to Oppenheimer (D-Mamaroneck) by a few hundred votes in 2010.

The 37th District encompasses Bedford, Eastchester, Rye, Rye City, Harrison, Mamaroneck, North Castle, part of New Rochelle, Scarsdale, part of White Plains and part of Yonkers.
