Lowey, Carvin And Morganthaler Mix Up At Harrison Forum

HARRISON, N.Y. – It was a mix and match kind of night at Tuesday’s Meet the Candidates forum for the New York State Congressional 17th District in Harrison. Incumbent candidate Rep. Nita Lowey (D-Harrison) and challengers Joseph Carvin (R) and Francis Morganthaler (WTP) agreed and disagreed on a number of topics discussed.

The forum was held Tuesday night at the Harrison Public Library and hosted by the League of Women Voters (LWV). Moderated by LWV member Nate Levin, the three candidates fielded questions that were given by Levin and also questions from the dozens of residents in attendance. The hot topics discussed included health care, gun control laws and the issue of pro-choice vs. pro-life.

On the issue of reproductive rights, Morganthaler said he is pro-life, while Lowey and Carvin said they are pro-choice.

“In this world where we are still searching for a cure for things like cancer and AIDS, I have to think that maybe there’s the possibility that maybe that cure was aborted,” Morganthaler said in support of pro-life.

In regards to her pro-choice stance, Lowey said, “That’s a decision that the government has no right to be involved with,” Lowey said in regards to her stance on pro-choice.

On the issue of gun control, Lowey said she has been a full supporter of stricter gun laws, while Carvin was a supporter of the second amendment but said that he believes there should be a law banning the purchase of assault rifles. Morganthaler said he was not a supporter of stricter gun laws.

“When tragic situations occur, you have to sometimes look and say, ‘Was it the gun that caused the crime? Or was it the person?’” Morganthaler said.

Lowey is running for her 13th term and has spent 24 years serving in New York State Congress. Carvin is currently the Town Supervisor in Rye and is running for the first time.  Morganthaler, a resident of Hawthorne, is running for the first time and previously served as a lieutenant in the New York City Fire Department.

The 17th District is made up of Rockland County, Yorktown, Peekskill, Cortlandt, Mt. Kisco, New Castle, Ossining, Mt. Pleasant, North Castle, Greenburgh, Harrison and portions of Rye.
