PORT CHESTER, N.Y. -- Marcella Mazzarri and Brianna Nieves were both at the Port Chester Library Tuesday reading. However, one girl was reading for school and the other was lost in her book just for the fun of it. "I think reading is fun and it's good for your brain," said Marcella, 10, a fifth-grader at King Street School.
Marcella is reading "The Witches," by Roald Dahl, which she read last year for school but liked so much she's reading it again.
This is in addition to her required reading for school. Her class is reading "Ghostville Elementary," by Debbie Dadie. Marcella has to spend at least 20 minutes reading every day, though she said she usually reads a little bit longer.
Brianna, 11, is reading "Ella Enchanted," by Gail Carson Levine, in her sixth grade class at Port Chester Middle School. For homework she has to write a paragraph-long response to a scene in the book where the main character, Ella, tricks a fairy.
"I thought it was funny," said Brianna. However, she still prefers math and doesn't read longer than the required 20 minutes for her homework.
Her friend Mazzarri disagrees with her. "I like books," said Marcella. "It's fun to read a book and tell someone about it."
