CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. While most students were at home on Saturday, Chappaqua schools were busy running two of its PTA branches biggest fund-raisers, which happened to fall on the same day.
At Westorchard Elementary School, the PTA was selling off stuffed animals, video games, DVDs and more as its 24th annual Used Toy and Book Fair. All the toys are from all the parents in the area, and whatever we dont sell goes to local charities that we choose, said Julie Hare of the Westorchard PTA.
In addition to donating various books and toys, many parents also contributed baked goods, including Cookie Monster cupcakes from Barbara Lerman. The event is Westorchards second biggest fund-raiser of the year, with the first being its After School Enrichment Programs.
Across town, Robert E. Bell Middle School was hosting the 27th annual Craft Fair. Nearly 100 vendors set up shop throughout the schools gym, auditorium and hallways, including local merchants such as Gail Patricks Café and Aurora.
Many of the vendors were taking advantage of the season by selling winter clothing and Thanksgiving treats. The schools PTA benfited by selling off school merchandise and tickets for a raffle.
Joining the vendors for the first year were eight local Girl Scout troops, who were accepting donations of clothings, toys, food and more. Troop 2757 was sending DVDs and hand-written letters to soldiers in Afghanistan.
Other troops collected books and DVDs for the Putnam Hospital Center, Halloween costumes for next year's costume swap, clothing of any kind for Neighbor's Link, pet food for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and more.
