DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. Hyman I. Shakin, a former Dobbs Ferry resident, died May 8. He was 95.
The son of Morris and Ethel Shakin, he was born in Bronx, N.Y. Shakin served in the U.S. Army in the 9th Infantry and received two Purple Heart honors. He also carried the first American flag into Algeria.
Shakin was the owner of Window Fashions located in White Plains for more than 40 years. He was a member of the Jewish War Veterans and Disabled American Veterans. He was a former member of the Greenburgh Hebrew Center.
He met his wife, Mae, while in a hospital in Fort Devens, Mass. She was in the USO and they met while playing cards. They were married on April 26, 1945. Most recently of Rye Brook, Shakin was an avid gardener and fisherman.
He is survived by two daughters, Susan (Allan) Miller and Debra Epstein, her fiancée, Bill MacLoon; a sister, Rose Mandel; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, two sisters and a brother.
A funeral service will be held at noon on Thursday at Edwards-Dowdle Funeral Home in Dobbs Ferry. Burial will immediately follow at Sharon Gardens with Shiva at the home of Sue and Allan Miller.
Memorial donations may be made to the Jewish War Veterans or Hadassah.
