The free performance will feature ensemble and choral numbers by students who have been attending “Sing Your Heart Out” voice lessons at the library over the past several months. The students, 55 years and older, have discovered their voices and performance talents under the guidance of artist-in-residence Eric Jennings, a popular performer and lecturer in the southern Westchester area. Jennings will accompany the vocalists on the piano. Donations will be accepted at the door.

The Melodies of Mark Twain Musical Concert will be performed by the Rosewood Chamber Ensemble in the Ossie Davis Theater of the New Rochelle Public Library on Sunday, May 17, from 3-4 p.m. Held in conjunction with New Rochelle’s 2015 Big Read of “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer,” the concert will highlight author Mark Twain’s passion for music. Flutist Barbara Hopkins and guitarist Judy Handler will chronicle his life and musical interests from his early days in the South to his final days in Connecticut including stories and quotes from Twain.

A feature of the concert is the use of historical instruments. Handler will be playing an 1893 Martin parlor guitar that is the same make and model that Twain owned and played, a reproduction of a Panormo guitar from the 1830s and a Paramount banjo. Hopkins will be playing wooden flutes by Asa Hopkins made in Litchfield, Connecticut, in the 1830s, a reproduction of a flute by Liebel from the 1830s, and a modern flute. There is a suggested donation of $2 at the door.

The New Rochelle Public Library and Huguenot Children’s Library will be closed Sunday, May 10, for Mother’s Day and on Sunday, May 24, and Monday, May 25, in observance of Memorial Day.

The New Rochelle Public Library is at 1 Library Plaza.
