Yorktown Trail Group Launches Economic Development Intiative

YORKTOWN, N.Y. -- About 50 people gathered at Yorktown’s Railroad Station Park on Saturday to participate in the unveiling of the first economic development initiative of the Yorktown Town Trail Committee: the distribution of the brochure The North County Trailway at Yorktown Heights Map and Visitor Guide.

The brochure features a map of the trailway as it passes through the Heights hamlet. Copies of the free brochure are available at Rita’s of Yorktown, Trailside Café and Yorktown Cycles, all on Commerce Street, and at Town Hall.

After the brief ceremony, groups departed for one of three special events hosted by the committee. Mark Linehan, committee co-chair led a group of cyclists on a ride along the Trailway to Millwood; committee member Janelle Robbins, executive director of the Bedford Audubon Society, led a group of bird watchers on a walk along the trailway; and committee supporter Paul Moskowitz led a group of hikers up Turkey Mountain.

“This is just the beginning, the first of many projects we’re planning that will use the town’s extensive network of waking, hiking and cycling trails as a way to promote economic development, not just in the Heights, but in Yorktown’s other business hamlets," Linehan explained. “Trail users spend money, and we want them to spend their money in Yorktown.”

The committee is raising funds for its second major project : two permanent "Welcome to Yorktown" signs at either end of the trailway that will feature the Heights map.

“We’re ready to order the signs tomorrow,” Linehan said. “We just need an individual, business or group to step forward with the donation.”
