Connecticut is host of the largest National Trails Day celebration in the nation, with 259 events on June 1 and 2 throughout the state.

In Fairfield, take a leisurely, guided 1.5-mile hike through one of Connecticut Audubon Society’s sanctuaries Saturday, June 1, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at Larsen Wildlife Sanctuary. Participants will discover temperate deciduous forest, ponds, garden marsh, meadow and swamp, while observing several bird habitats and ecological points of interest and discussing efforts to protect them. The varied terrain will be of easy-to-moderate difficulty; wear sturdy footwear. Meet leader Colleen Noyes in the Connecticut Audubon Society Center at Fairfield’s Nature Store, 2325 Burr Street. In-store specials will be offered. Event is rain or shine, but heavy rain cancels. Preregistration is recommended. For questions and to preregister: contact 203-259-6305 x109 or jwinter@ctaudubon.org.

On Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., participants can enjoy a beautiful 3.5-mile (round-trip) journey on the waters of the Saugatuck River. Bring your own boat or rent one from EMS. Also bring paddle, paddle gloves, life vest, safety whistle, snacks, lunch and water. All participants meet at the Eastern Mountain Sports Fairfield store at 1939 Blackrock Turnpike at 10 a.m. If you need to rent a boat, arrive at 9:30 a.m. so that the boat can be secured to your car (paddle and life jacket included with rental). You can coordinate with leader Kim Hooper Stanley and staff if you do not have transportation racks for a rental boat. The launch will be at the public boat launch in Westport under I-95. Heavy rain cancels. Preregistration is recommended. Questions and to preregister: contact Kim Hooper Stanley at 203-334-7006 or e0027st@ems.com.
