That's why Rockland County Legislator Aney Paul and Legislature Chairman Alden H. Wolfe have partnered with People to People to conduct a Winter Coat Drive.
New or gently-used coats for children and adults are being accepted until Dec. 31. Residents can drop off donations at the Legislature’s Office in the Allison-Parris County Office Building, 11 New Hempstead Road in New City.
People to People is Rockland’s largest food pantry and also provides school supplies; holiday gifts for children; and clothing for newborns, school children, professionals seeking jobs and others. The agency provided assistance to nearly 14,000 Rockland households last year.
“We see so many kids come here that don’t have adequate winter clothing, including coats,” said Diane Serratore, People to People executive director. “The parents don’t either, but they’re more concerned about their kids. When you’re struggling to put food on the table, sometimes a wind breaker has to be enough even though it’s not.”
“Providing a winter coat to our neighbors not only helps keep them warm, it also lets them know that others are thinking about them and trying to help,” Paul said.
Wolfe said that many people have extra coats that they just don’t wear anymore.
“By donating those coats, you can help keep someone in our community warm this winter,” Wolfe said. “Please check your closets and donate whatever you can.”
