HARRISON, N.Y. Third- through eighth-graders in the Harrison Central School District scored well above the New York state average on English and math proficiency exams administered in April for the 2011-12 school year.
State data released Tuesday showed that 73.1 percent of Harrison students in grades three through eight were proficient in English Language Arts, while 84.7 percent of those students were proficient in math. The report said that statewide, 55.1 percent of students were proficient in English while 64.8 percent were proficient in math. Both numbers are up across the state from last year.
"There is some positive momentum in these numbers," Board of Regents Chancellor Merryl H. Tisch said in a press release. "But too many of our students, especially students of color, English Language Learners and special education students, are currently not on a course for college and career readiness."
Students at Louis M. Klein Middle School were 10 percentage points above average in math (65.6 percent proficiency), while 71.1 percent of middle school students were proficient in English. Harrison Avenue School had the most proficient students in both math (93.2 percent) and English (90 percent), while Samuel J. Preston, though above the state average in both categories, had the least proficient students in math (60.3 percent) and English (57.4 percent).
