Harrison Debate Team Continues On Winning Path

HARRISON, N.Y. -- The Harrison High School debate team is celebrating two more victories.

The team won its sixth consecutive tournament in December at Ridge High School in New Jersey, bringing the total wins of the program to seven. The team claimed five of the top 10 positions in the novice division.

Freshman Matt Zinman was named the winner and top novice speaker of the tournament, receiving three perfect scores in his five rounds of debate with an undefeated record, representatives said. Emma Abramson, also with an undefeated record claimed second place, and Raffi Piliero finished in third place. Sophomore Amr El-Azizi captured fifth place and Daniel Schapiro finished in 7th place.

On the first day of winter break, the team was back in action, securing its seventh consecutive victory at Regis High School in Manhattan. Jack Wilson came in first place in the novice division with an undefeated record. Two additional novice debaters had undefeated records as well and finished in the top five. Sammi O’Reilly finished in third place and Kate Ryan finished in fourth place. 

The New Year began with the Harrison High School Debate Team capturing 14 awards at the Newark Science Park High School tournament. All six of Harrison’s varsity debaters reached elimination rounds. Sophomore Evan Burger reached the top eight, the quarterfinals. Junior Amy Geller and sophomores Kathryn Kenny, Elyssa Alfieri, and Bea Almedia reached top 16 and sophomore Sarah Ryan reached top 32.
