Harrison High Debate Team Finds Winning Formula

HARRISON, N.Y. - Harrison senior Ashley Muller led the way as the high school debate team saw continued success in tournaments throughout the region. The team won the varsity division this month at the Regis High School tournament.

Muller was undefeated in all the rounds and was named the tournament champion. It was her first championship. Junior Peri Mendelsohn was also undefeated and was named the runner-up.

"We are so excited to see so many students doing well in our growing program," team advisor Chetan Hertzig said. "We look forward to continuing that success in the New Year."

Harrison's team also made second place in the novice division at the tournament. Freshman Erica LaManna was undefeated as the tournament's runner-up. Freshman Emma LaBarbera also placed eighth after finishing undefeated.

Freshmen Amy Geller, Kiana Comizio and Tory Tiburzi all finished with winning records, each losing one round.

At a separate Princeton University three-day debate, all 12 Harrison students involved posted winning records. In the varsity division, which featured 140 of the top debaters in the region, Sophomore Danny DeBois reached the top 16 and was named the tournament's third speaker. Seniors Christina Loguidice and Ally Brabant both reach double-octofinals, and Ally was named the tournament's seventh-place speaker.

In the novice division at Princeton, which featured 116 competitors, freshmen LaManna and Tiburzi reached the top 8 and LaManna was named the tournament's top speaker. Comizio and freshman Michael Scoli both reached the top 16.

The teams awaits a heavy winter schedule that will include debates at Lexington, Massacheusetts, Columbia University and Harvard University.
