Harrison High School Fitness Center Being Expanded

HARRISON, N.Y. – The fitness center at Harrison High School is being expanded so more students can use it, according to Superintendent Louis Wool.

“Our high school has over 1,000 kids, and the fitness center is profoundly undersized,” Wool says. “Childhood obesity is a very important part of our curriculum. We want the fitness center to be available during and outside of the school day.”

The high school wrestling room will be gutted and incorporated into the new fitness center, Wool says, and wrestling team practices will be moved to Louis M. Klein Middle School.

The high school law room will also be redone, as will several science labs. Some of the cabinetry from those rooms will installed at the middle school.

“We do these repairs incrementally because we don’t have the ability to do them at one time,” Wool says.

The high school is not the only district facility getting repairs. Parsons Memorial School, the oldest building in the district, will get a new library media center. Wool says the current library doesn’t have a separate space to conduct IT sessions for its staff. The new media center will be on the third floor, where the maintenance crew has already cleared space. While making space, the crew discovered a skylight that will be integrated into the design of the media center, Wool says.

“There will be new lights, an air-conditioning system and a new lab equal to our other three elementary schools,” Wool says. “We are also adding new lights in the school’s gymnasium and are re-tiling the cafeteria floor.”
