HARRISON, N.Y. -- Harrison High School has selected "This I Believe: The Personal Philosophies of Remarkable Men and Women" as this summer's Big Read.
The Big Read is a program instituted by the English Department where students at all grade levels read a common text during the summer. When students return in the fall, the book is used as a cornerstone in conversations and activities designed to unify the students, parents, faculty and staff.
"This I Believe" is a collection of essays inspired by the popular 1950s radio series of the same name, hosted by Edward R. Murrow. The book includes belief statements from prominent Americans such as Colin Powell, Gloria Steinem, Bill Gates, Robert Fulghum and Yo-Yo Ma, as well as everyday citizens such as parents, students, scientists, writers and an astronaut.
Students are expected to read the entire book during the summer. When they return in the fall the students will compose their own personal essays about the beliefs that guide their daily lives. The district encourages families to read along with their children and engage in text-based conversations. Copies of the book are available throughout the Westchester Public Libraries.
