Harrison Inducts Members Into Junior Honor Society

HARRISON, N.Y. – Louis M. Klein Middle School inducted more than 90 students into the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) with a ceremony Tuesday night at Harrison High School.

NJHS Advisor Emily Bryant said that students needed to maintain at least a 90 grade point average throughout sixth and seventh grade and show qualities of scholarship, service, leadership, citizenship and character to be considered for the organization.

“This organization is about giving back,” Bryant said. “Once students apply and are accepted we expect them to be model citizens.”

Louis M. Klein Middle School Principal Scott Fried said that last year, the NJHS’s first in Harrison, about 50 students were accepted. Fried said they set the bar high and that he is expecting this year’s members to take the torch from the students moving on to Harrison High School.

“The character of these students is unquestionable,” Fried said. “We are hoping this years’ members take (the NJHS) to a higher level. Our goal is to have every student at every grade level make this organization. We want them to be leaders and demonstrate their skills to the younger students who will be here next year.”

The NJHS participated in Relay for Life this year, one of the many causes the group takes up. Sarah Ryan, president of the school’s NJHS class of 2012, said she hopes this year's inductees continue what her class started.

“Just because you are middle school students doesn’t mean that you are limited to anything,” Ryan said.
