Harrison Library Gives Kids Writing Awards

HARRISON, N.Y. – The Harrison Public Library awarded the winners of the Ninth Annual Children's Writing Contest with trophies and certificates Wednesday night with a ceremony.

Miss Bonnie, the children's librarian, who wouldn't give her full name and requested to be referred to as such, said that a lot of thought went into the stories from children in grades kindergarten to sixth. All stories were handwritten and some of them were illustrated as well. She added that she judged the stories based on how well the kids could construct sentences, how coherent the stories were and what type of characters they came up with.

"It was very hard to judge them because the stories were all so wonderful," Miss Bonnie said. "I could see how hard they worked by looking at the eraser marks. They all caught my attention and I couldn't ask for more."

Talia Tammero won in the second and third-grade category for her story, "Becky the Butterfly." She said that she was thinking about butterflies from going to the zoo and decided to write a story about one who becomes friends with an ant.

Library Director Galina Chernykh said that writing is very important for children because it stimulates creativity. Chernykh said that the library is there to nurture children with various programs from writing, to arts and crafts to storytelling.

"It's unbelievable what these kids have come up with," Chernykh said. "Hopefully we will see one of their books at the library in the future. This contest helps us build community. Look at all the different people who showed up for the ceremony. I'm hoping to see more of them."
