Harrison Passes School Budget By Apparent 3-1 Margin

HARRISON, N.Y. – Harrison voters gave their school district a resounding "yes" on its proposed budget, passing it by a near 3-1 margin, according to unofficial results, to increase taxes by 1.97 percent.

A preliminary count at Louis M. Klein Middle School had 1,579 people voting in approval and 612 opposed – 72 percent. Superintendent Louis Wool, who has worked in the district since 1999, said that it was the first time in his 13 years in Harrison that all four elementary schools approved the budget.

"We've spent years building credibility with our budgets and no one here can recall the last time all four schools passed a budget," Wool said shortly after the results came in. "It's a resounding “yes” to our board of education and our two incumbents that were reelected on this historic night. I am so pleased that the community stood with us."

Wool said that Parsons Memorial School and Samuel J. Preston Elementary School have been the schools to vote down the budget in the past. However, this year, both schools approved it with Parsons approving it 275-161 and Preston voting 218-107. Harrison Avenue School and Purchase Elementary, both schools who historically vote in favor of the budget voted to approve the budget with Harrison Avenue voting 548-224 in favor and Purchase by a 538-120 margin.

Resident Kamala Carducci voted to pass the budget. Carducci said that she was excited not only that the budget passed but by how much.

"This is a monumental moment," Carducci said. "Last year was tough for us. I am happy that it was able to pass so easily."

Both incumbents Dennis DiLorenzo and Joan Tiburzi ran unopposed reelection campaigns to the school board. Tiburzi received 1,384 votes while DiLorenzo got 1,152.

"This is an important measure for our entire community," Tiburzi said. "People came together and supported our schools loudly and clearly. It shows that they value both education and our work and it is much appreciated. We have a great community with a great group of parents."
