Harrison School Board Presenting 2012-13 Budget

HARRISON, N.Y. – The Harrison Central School District Board of Education (BOE) will release its preliminary budget when it meets Wednesday .

With New York State imposing a 2 percent tax cap for property owners, the board will have to do some picking and choosing when it comes to carving out the budget for the 2012-13 school year. The last meeting was scheduled for Feb. 29, but was postponed until this Wednesday.

Though the board of education has not released any numbers yet on what the proposed tax hike will be, it must keep the tax levy increase under 2 percent due to the new imposed state law. Last year’s adopted budget increased the tax rate by 3.18 percent and the tax levy by 1.62 percent. In total, the 2011-12 adopted school budget laid off 10 teachers and 10 teacher aides. One program that was cut in last year’s adopted budget was a health program for elementary school teachers.

The 2011-12 adopted school budget passed last year with nearly 60 percent of voter approval. Residents will be asked to vote on the 2012-2103 proposed budget on May 15 from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. at their designated polling location.

The March 7 school board meeting will begin at 7:15 p.m. at Louis M. Klein Middle School. The public portion of the meeting will begin at 8:15 p.m.
