Harrison Student Wins Engineering Award

HARRISON, N.Y. – Clare McManus of Harrison and three other Fairfield University engineering students have been honored for their senior project, designing and constructing a "Light Sport Aircraft Using a 4-Stroke Engine."

The project, which McManus completed with John Burke of Wilton, Conn., Kevin Richard of Shelton, Conn., and Neil Rodrigues of Framingham, Mass., won the 2012 Dean’s Award from the School of Engineering. The vehicle, which includes a survivor locator light to help the U.S. Coast Guard, a helicopter tail bumper and a heat generator for homes, was partially made in the school’s laboratories.

A press release said the project “stood above all the others.” The design is compliant with Federal Aviation Administration regulations. For their efforts, the students received $3,000 from a NASA Connecticut Space Grant Consortium.

“I believe we won because we used our passion for engineering to create something that clearly showed the hours of dedication and hard work we put into this project,” McManus said.

The senior engineering project requires the students to create a product that is needed in the marketplace. Dr. Jack Beal, dean of the School of Engineering, said in a press release the projects are meant to test students engineering knowledge.

“They actually produced the first hardware phase of the project, not just the paper design,” Beal said.
