Art teacher Melissa Sgrulletta got the idea to submit self portraits from her class after previewing the show last fall. The students were excited to be able to visit the museum and view their artwork alongside the exhibit.
Preston fifth-grade students experience two major units of study routed in portraiture during the year.
One unit incorporates traditional drawing skills with a focus on realistic proportion, and the other incorporates library media and technology with a focus of balance.
“Students are using technology such as Adobe Photoshop elements to create another self portrait using completely different tools and techniques inspired by the Pop Art movement. The juxtaposition of the different experiences and completed work has been very motivating for the students,” said Sgrulletta in a statement.
The "Eye to I, 3000 Years of Portraits" exhibition can be viewed through Feb. 16 in the Beitzel and Righter Galleries at the Katonah Museum of Art, 134 Jay St. (Route 22), in Katonah.
The gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m., Sunday.
