HARRISON, N.Y. -- Harrison Avenue Elementary School students got a blast from the past recently.
Fourth graders at the school dressed in colonial attire and immersed themselves into early American life as part of the school's annual Colonial Day activities. Students learned about the history of Harrison during Colonial times, participated in a colonial dance and feasted on the cuisine of the times including cornbread they had made for the festivities, school officials said.
The social studies curriculum of fourth graders focuses on the history of the state of New York, school officials said, and student learning begins with geography and then moves to lessons on the Native Americans, New Amsterdam and then gradually into Colonial Times.
“The students really enjoy Colonial Day because what they have studied for the past few weeks comes alive,” said HAS Fourth grade teacher Lauren Fahey, according to a press release.
