The Digital Literacy students recently took part in the “Hour of Code” at LMK Middle School. The initiative coincides with Computer Science week on the principle that "anyone can learn to program a computer if they are given the opportunity," representatives said.
Digital Literacy teachers Ashley Harvey and Lisa Luciano said they were excited to see how engaged and determined their students were in learning basic code.
The goals of the LMK “Hour of Code” were to have students know the definition of computer science and computer coding; understand that there are multiple languages that computers “speak” and that each language is used to create different programs such as apps, games, websites, and software; and to be able to code for one hour or more and reflect on their learning experience in a written reflection, representatives said.
Students used code.org to learn and practice some basic computer skills. Additionally, students learned about the variety of careers available to computer programmers and the pathway available to them personally at Harrison High School if they choose to pursue computer programming.
