J.J. Abrams, the director of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens and a Sarah Lawrence alum, gave the commencement address at last Friday's ceremony to the 355 students receiving their bachelor of arts degrees. Abram spoke about the importance of gratitude, respect, humanity, and belief in the graduates’ own accomplishments.

“It’s not just important to feel gratitude, it’s critical to express it," Abrams said, telling students they should write thank you notes.

Abrams said graduates should work to fight for what they know is right and that voting matters.

“Not just for yourself but for those who might not have as strong a voice or station or college degree in their pockets – is not about being a Democrat or Republican, it’s about being human," Abrams said. "Our institutions matter. Democracy matters. There is no better option out there and it needs to be defended."
