“As digitization allows hidden collections to be shared, teachers and scholars all over the country will benefit," said CIC President Richard Ekman. "These 42 institutions — some of which are in remote locations — are known for their dedication to teaching and for providing life-changing liberal arts education to students from all backgrounds. Through the Consortium, they will be able to gain access to an important national digital resource. Their one-of-a-kind collections will be more visible and more widely used.”
Manhattanville College will digitize and catalog the "Old Manhattanville" photographic collection for public access. The collection of photographs documenting the landscape, people and architecture of Manhattanville's old campus consists of more than 500 prints from 1875 to 1950, as well as scrapbook pages, cabinet cards and more.
The Consortium aims to enhance student and faculty research and improve teaching and learning through a uniform digital cataloging system.
The digitizing projects for the 42 institutions are supported by a $2.2 million grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The collections will be publicly accessible via the Digital Public Library of America through Arstor.
The consortium's first meeting will take place in Washington, D.C. from Sept. 10 to 12.
