The 11-day festival, sponsored by the International Studies Department, “will feature eight films that portray multiple cultures ranging from Argentina to Japan,” reads a news release from the college.
“We selected the films because all of them in one way or another deal with confronting an historical or cultural past,” said Professor Binita Mehta, chairperson of the International Studies Department, in the release.
Of the eight films, two will have special premiere screenings.
“The first is From the River to River: The Story of Durga Puja, which was recently filmed in India,” said Mehta in the release. “The other is a series of short films from Haiti’s only film school, the Cine Institute, in Jacmel.”
It is Mehta’s hope that after people watch and discuss the films, they “will gain a deeper understanding of the histories and cultures represented.”
The International Film Festival, which is free and open to the public, is supported by Manhattanville College alumna Sue Weil, who graduated in 2010. It begins at 7 p.m. Monday in Manhattanville’s Berman Student Center Theater.
