Earlier this year, there were several incidents involving multiple students, including the fatal stabbing of Valaree Schwab and a separate stabbing incident that saw a student strike another before fleeing campus. In response, security has been tightened, there has been an increased police presence near the North Avenue corridor and the safety task force was created, comprising of community stakeholders looking to keep students safe.

During their latest meeting, the task force saw a presentation hosted by district officials regarding the Student Code of Conduct. Task force members were then broken down into their focus groups to discuss community resources, as well as the policies and practices of the district, the high school and city as a whole.

Officials said that each group identified questions or concerns they may have with the assigned policies and requested additional data or presentations from district staff as part of their ongoing work.

The task force noted that if any community members have ideas or recommendations within the four areas we are examining that they want the Task Force to consider, they can email the ideas to Ideas.nrtaskforce@gmail.com.
