PURCHASE, N.Y. -- Purchase College students traveled across the United States to California to take on other colleges in the College Union Poetry Slam Invitational.
Aliya Birdoff, David Gerges, Samuel McCausland, Francine Hendrickson, Sahir Wilson and Judith Angeles traveled to the University of La Verne in La Verne, Calif., where they took on students from 48 other slam poetry clubs.
Known as GRIOT (Gifted Rhythmic Intellectuals Organizing Together), the slam poetry club formed in the fall of this year. Slam poetry is a competition where poets recite their original work and are judged on a numeric scale by previously selected members of the audience.
"GRIOT's mission is to organize a spoken word poetry community and maintain a poetry slam team at Purchase in order to nurture activism, craft communication skills and multiculturalism," a press released from the college said.
During its first year in operation, the club hosted various open mics and performances on campus. The club is hoping to invite professional slam poets to perform on the campus in the future.
