PURCHASE, N.Y. -- Purchase College--SUNY will present a panel discussion on "The Role of the Critic Today" from 7-9 p.m. Monday, Sept. 28 at the Recital Hall of the Performing Arts Center.

Renowned film critic Manohla Dargis - -the college's 2015-16 Durst Distinguished Chair in Literature - -will moderate the panel discussion. She has selected as participants three critics who represent a range of venues and vantage points: Wesley Morris, staff writer at Grantland; Emily Nussbaum, television critic for The New Yorker; and Amy Taubin, contributing editor at Film Comment and Sight and Sound.

Anthony Domestico, assistant professor of literature at Purchase College, commented, “Good criticism — criticism that passionately celebrates what went right in a work and persuasively points out what went wrong — is crucial to the continuing life of any art form."

The free discussion is presented by the School of Humanities at Purchase College.

Dargis graduated from Purchase College in 1985 with a degree in literature. She went on to become a film critic at the Village Voice and the Los Angeles Times. She currently is the co-chief film critic (with A.O. Scott) for The New York Times. She has won numerous awards for her work and was named a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in criticism.

As the Durst Distinguished Chair in Literature, Dargis will present several programs throughout the academic year, including an intensive criticism-writing workshop for a small group of students. Under her direction, workshop participants will view visual material, read critical works about the material and practice their own critical writing.

Purchase College is at 735 Anderson Hill Road, Purchase.
