Senior Chloe Giroux has been named the winner of the 2014 Congressional Art Competition for the 17th Congressional District of New York. Giroux's work will hang in the U.S. Capitol Building for one year. Giroux has been invited to travel to Washington, D.C. to meet with U.S. Rep. Nita Lowey (D-Westchester), who represents the district. The work of senior, Krista Escaffi-Aguilar, was also recognized with an honorable mention in the district, according to a press release.
“I am impressed by Chloe and her amazing artistic talent. I couldn’t be more proud that her work will be displayed in the United States Capitol where millions of visitors will be able to see it. Congratulations to Chloe for her incredible work. I was equally impressed by Krista’s excellent work. I have no doubt that in the near future, both Chloe and Krista's work will be on display at galleries, exhibitions, and museums,” said Congresswoman Nita Lowey.
The U.S. House of Representatives Congressional Institute sponsors the nationwide high school visual art competition each spring "to encourage and recognize artistic talent in the nation and in each congressional district," according to the release.
Since the competition began in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students have participated, according to the release.
“The School of the Holy Child community is thrilled for both Chloe and Krista. The work each student submitted to the Congressional Art Competition demonstrated great skill, a unique voice, and a commanding presence,” Head of School William C. Hambleton said. “We appreciate the efforts of Congresswoman Nita Lowey’s office, and join in celebrating Chloe and Krista, whose commitment to the field of visual arts has been evident throughout their time at Holy Child."
