Giacomo's Two Goals Give Rye Town/Harrison a Win

RYE, N.Y. -- The thought of their previous game was still fresh in the minds of the Rye Town/Harrison varsity hockey players. The Titans had a three-goal lead slip away and then gave up a late goal in a loss to Eastchester/Tuckahoe/Bronxville. The Titans did not want a replay of this against Byram Hills Monday. Once Rye Town/Harrison got the lead, the Titans added to it and were steadfast in holding it as they went on to a 4-0 victory in Section 1 Conference III game at Playland Ice Casino. Sal Giacomo, a Harrison senior, scored two goals, including one short-handed, and had an assist. Dean Brancucci finished with a goal and an assist. Goalie Jaime Ketchabaw stopped 25 shots to register the shutout as Harrison improved to 5-5 overall and 3-0 in the league. “We wanted to come out strong against this team,” said Giacomo, who assisted on Brancucci’s goal to open the scoring. “The bus ride home after the ETB game, it was so quiet you could hear a pin drop. We were pretty disappointed.” Giacomo fed Steve Jacobson along the left-wing board and then Jacobson made a perfect cross-ice feed to Brancucci in the right face-off circle. Brancucci received the pass and snapped a wrist shot in at the 3:50 mark. That would be the Titans’ only goal of the period, despite peppering Byram Hills’ goalie Josh Sirota with 17 shots. Sirota and the penalty-killing unit kept the Bobcats within a goal after one, killing off four Rye Town/Harrison power plays. Giacomo doubled the Titans’ lead at 8:54 of the second period, converting on a power play. Brancucci found Giacomo and a quick wrist shot just eluded Scrota’s save attempt. The Titans kept the pressure on the Bobcats throughout the second period only to have Sirota stop 12 more shots. “Even though it was 2-0, we knew they were still in the game so we just kept working hard and we didn’t want to give them a chance to get back in the game,” Giacomo said. Kevin Fusco struck early in the third period -- at 2:52 -- with a short-handed goal and Giacomo closed out the scoring with a second short-handed goal.
