Gomes Sets Manhattanville Volleyball Record in Win

PURCHASE, N.Y. -- Makana Gomes led the Manhattanville College women’s volleyball team to a thrilling victory and, in doing so, established a new program standard. Gomes, a senior from Honolulu, Hawaii, registered 19 digs, 16 kills and 11 assists, rallying Manhattanville to a 25-18, 20-25, 24-26, 25-15, 17-15 win over visiting Lehman College Wednesday. The 19 digs gives Gomes 1,084 in her career, a new women’s volleyball record. Gomes eclipsed the former mark of 1,073 set by 1999 graduate Jamie Kriksciun. Manhattanville equaled its program standard for wins with 13, which it set in 2001. Gomes was unaware of her record until she read the volleyball story on the school’s sports website. “I had no idea and I was really in shock,” said Gomes, a double major in Political Science/Sociology and Anthropology. “When I told my parents, they were very happy. I am not the type of person who keeps track of that, records. I play the game because I enjoy it and it’s a labor of love.” Manhattanville Coach Amanda Alayon, who was an excellent defensive player at North Rockland High School and Fairleigh Dickinson University, enjoys watching Gomes on defense. “It’s no surprise that Makana broke the record,” Alayon said. “Makana is one of the hardest workers I’ve ever met, which is the reason why she is such a great defensive player and important piece to our puzzle. There is no ball that will hit the ground without Makana throwing her body after it. She has a big heart and is someone who truly loves volleyball and enjoys playing.” Gomes, who studied abroad in New Zealand last semester, said defense was ingrained in her at an early age, growing up playing in Hawaii. This led to her passion for becoming an outstanding all-around player. “It’s humbling,” she said. “You are never too good to hit the floor, going for a ball.” Gomes also set up Suzy Camaj for the match point, giving the team a thrilling win one day after dropping a five-setter to Wilkes. “The team’s 13th win was definitely well-earned and the girls absolutely deserve it,” Alayon said. “After a hard loss the night before, I was so excited to see how quickly they bounced back. It was a great milestone for us. Not only do we have players breaking records, but also the team tying for the most wins since 2001. I really could not be any prouder of this group of girls.” Veronica Ferreiras had a team-best 30 assists, Sam Delmar rang up a match-leading 29 digs and Damaris Morales was right behind her with 23. Suzy Camaj finished with 13 kills and Ally Johnson added 10 digs and nine kills.
