WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – Justin Altamuro said that, during pre-game warmups, he felt strong and was ready to pitch. Alatamuro then went out and showed he was on his game.
The 10-year-old Altamuro allowed two runs on two hits in four and two-thirds innings, lifting Harrison to an 11-2 win over Scarsdale in a winner’s bracket game of the District 20 Little League Baseball Minors Championship at Gedney Field.
Harrison moves into the winner’s bracket final at 5:45 p.m. Monday at McDowell Field in Ardsley. Scarsdale plays Ardsley in a loser’s bracket game at 4 p.m. Saturday at Volunteer Field.
“I just stayed calm and was trying my best to get people out,” said Altamuro, a sixth-grader-to-be at Louis M. Klein Middle School. “My fastball was working well.”
Altamuro had a no-hitter through four innings before Jaishan Saigal led off the fifth with a bloop single. He allowed one more hit – to Kevin Walker – in the fifth before reaching his maximum pitch count. Ben Seibel came in and George Brady greeted him with a two-run single, making the score 4-2 through five.
“My defense was so strong,” said Altamuro, who also had a RBI single.
Harrison made many fine defensive plays, led by first baseman Anthony Mastrogiacomo. In the fourth inning, he made consecutive scoops on throws in the dirt, resulting in outs. Altamuro said after the game that Mastrogiacomo’s new nickname is “Nacho Scoops.”
“I knew I had to make the scoop on those throws to help the team win and not let them get on base,” said the 11-year-old Mastrogiacomo, a sixth-grader-to-be at Louis M. Klein Middle School. “I made sure I looked the ball into my glove.”
Mastrogiacomo delivered a run-scoring single in a three-run third inning. With two outs, Riley Lefebvre singled in Greg Lucien with the first run of the inning. On the play, Seibel came around to score on an error. Mastrogiacomo followed Lefebvre with a single up the middle, chasing home Lefebvre.
“It felt good to get a hit there and help the team produce runs,” Mastrogiacomo said.
Lucien had two hits, walked twice and scored three runs. Lefebvre also tripled and scored two runs. Taisei Ishibashi added two hits, including a two-run single, and Dante Girardi had a run-scoring double.
Scarsdale had a fine defensive play, throwing out Lefebvre at the plate. Right fielder Luke Carnicelli relayed the ball to Saigal, who threw home to Brady and he tagged out Lefebvre.
