Harrison Boys Swim Team Earns Win in First Meet

HARRISON, N.Y. – Brian Pon thought he had his opponent beaten on the final lap of the 400 freestyle relay. On the third lap, he knew he was ahead and on the way back to the starting blocks he could not see his opponent at all.

So his reaction was natural when he looked at the scoreboard and saw that he and his teammates had lost by a 100th of a second.

“I was really mad,” said the junior on the Harrison High School swim team. “I can definitely swim better than that.”

Despite the loss in the final, and most exciting, event of the afternoon, Harrison defeated Ossining, 48-44, at Louis M. Klein Middle School on Wednesday in each team’s first meet of the season.

Ossining’s team in the 400 relay finished with a time of 3:36:49. Ossining finished at 3:36:50.

Harrison had other reasons to celebrate despite the loss. Several swimmers qualified for sectionals with their times on Wednesday, and J.T. Nangle already qualified for the state meet in just his first swim of the season in the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.22.

“That was a nice way to start the season,” Harrison coach Phill Dearstyne said.
