Nell Shapiro of Harrison, Sydney Sullivan of Port Chester, Cicely Käufer of Larchmont, Luisa Nahr of Larchmont, Natalie Tempesta of Port Chester and Zoe Gaillard of Mamaroneck all competed in the silver division. Sophia Jacobi of Harrison and Gianna Tempesta of Port Chester competed in the gold division. All of the gymnasts are between the ages of 8 and 14 years old.
The ISG gymnasts qualified for the regional competition by scoring high at the State Level Xcel Competition at Galaxy Gymnastics in Orangeburg, N.Y. The girls earned a first place medal for their bronze level team and a third place medal for their silver level team at the state competition.
The eight gymnasts from ISG joined others from Albany, Orange County and Rockland County to compete against five other New England teams at the regional competition. They demonstrated their skills on the beam, bars, floor, vault and all around, and competed for individual and team awards. This was the first year that New York has participated in the Xcel competition. While none of the gymnasts in the gold or silver division medaled in their individual events, the silver division team won third place overall.
“We were thrilled with our girls’ performances at this event," said coach Joann Distler. "Everyone put 100 percent into the preparations for this competition and some kids had a personal best kind of a day, even if they did not earn a medal. As our girls gain experience with this type of competition, we are going to see more and more success in the future.”
